Curtains can make or break a room. The right ones add warmth, texture, and style—but a few simple curtain mistakes can ruin the effect. According to curtain maker Pat Giddens there are rules to follow.
1. Fabric & Material Mistakes
Choosing the wrong fabric: Each fabric behaves differently. Linen relaxes over time, silk fades in sunlight, and wool needs airing. Pick materials suited to the room’s use and light and that suit the look you want to achieve.
Skipping linings: Lining or interlining adds insulation, reduces fading, and helps curtains hang beautifully. Skipping them might save money now but costs more later.
Ignoring sunlight and colourfastness: Avoid silk in south-facing rooms unless protected by sheers or UV lining.
2. Measuring & Fitting Errors
Inaccurate measurements: Measure twice, cut once. Small errors can be expensive.
Wrong pole or track size: Make sure curtains can stack clear of the window to let in light, enhance the view and make windows accessible.
Hanging too low: Mount poles higher to make ceilings look taller and rooms feel larger.
Poor hardware: Cheap or weak fittings can sag or break. Use quality brackets, especially for heavy fabrics.
No curtain return or overlap: Always return curtains to the wall. It reduces light seepage, improves privacy and curtains look much tidier for it.
3. Design Oversights
Wrong heading or fullness: The heading style affects how curtains move and hang. Too little fabric can look flat and skimpy.
Ignoring room style: Match fabric, colour, and scale to your overall décor.
Curtains vs. blinds: Not every window needs curtains—sometimes blinds are the smarter choice.
4. Functional & Practical Issues
Difficult headings: Some types, like tab or slot tops, don’t glide well for daily use.
Poor pattern matching: Misaligned seams or motifs look messy—precision matters.
Not locking fabric layers: Lining and interlining should be regularly secured to prevent twisting, uneven draping and provide longevity.
5. Light Control Mistakes
Expecting total blackout: Even blackout fabric allows light around edges. Combine blinds, curtains, and pelmets for best results.
6. Care & Maintenance
Wrong cleaning methods: Use specialist cleaners for lined or interlined curtains to avoid shrinkage or distortion.
Ignoring upkeep: Regular vacuuming, airing, and protection from sun or pests keep curtains looking new for years.
